Workers were seen busy at the intersection of highways 144 and 17 in Richmond Hill late Monday night, and a DOT spokesperson confirmed construction on a dedicated right turn only lane at the intersection is under way. Most of the work will be done at night. The project is expected to cost about $77,000 and take about 60 days to complete, if weather permits.

The addition of the right-turn-only lane is the result of what is called a quick response project by the DOT. It is aimed at easing congestion for commuters who take 144 to 17 into Savannah. Lengthy red lights can back up traffic in the right hand lane for about a mile during rush hours.
