A steady stream of cars headed into J.F. Gregory Park Saturday morning to support a good cause — and the event continues until 8 p.m.

The Richmond Hill Fire Department organized the day to raise money for its new initiative called “Operation Presents Under the Tree,” an effort to provide Christmas gifts for children of low-income families.

“I came all the way from Michigan to be part of this event,” joked Leslie Woycik, who was in town visiting family and decided to stop by. “My grandchildren each got a bike helmet and many more surprises. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Heads in Helmets, a non-profit group that supports bike safety, was on hand giving out free bike helmets to youths. Every slot in the pavilion was full, with vendors selling everything from food to drinks to clothing.

A live band and free Zumba classes will alternate throughout the afternoon at the pavilion, while a barbecue competition and corn hole tournament are on-going.

Other activities include face painting, pony rides, games and two inflatables, including one that is a water slide.

Lt. Brendon Greene of the RHFD said the goal was to raise $15,000. They will partner with United Way to deliver the gifts and a holiday meal to families at Christmas.

Admission is free, but donations are accepted for the use of the inflatables, as well as for autographs from members of the Savannah Bananas who were on hand. Vendors were also going to donate a portion of their proceeds and the corn hole and barbecue teams paid entry fees.

The main sponsor of the event, Realtor Randy Bocook, as well as Fire Chief Ralph Catlett and Police Chief Mitch Shores, are also raising money for the effort — with the loser promising to kiss a pig at the end of the day.

Other sponsors include EOM, Charlie Grainger’s, The Ford Plantation, Bubba’s Bistro, Melody’s Coastal Café, Papa’s Pizza, Molly MacPherson’s, Cub Scout Pack 527, Coca Cola, The Crossroads Center and The Ice Cream Stop. Boy Scout Troop 486 was on hand to provide parking assistance.
