A Bryan County resident has a little extra dough in her pockets after winning the top prize from a Georgia Lottery instant game.
Phonda Bishop of Richmond Hill won recently the $300,000 jackpot from the $5 scratch-off lottery ticket “Golden Age.” She purchased the ticket at the Parker’s Market located at 7530 Hwy. 17.
“I scratched it and thought I didn’t win anything until I looked again,” she said. “I told my husband and he asked, ‘Are you serious?’”
Bishop, 45, works for a company that services the U.S. military and was home on rest and recuperation from Iraq. She returns overseas this weekend where she’ll be for nine months, but she isn’t taking the extra cash with her.
“I’m going to bank the prize and deal with it once I get back,” she said.
Bishop and her husband, Leo, have one daughter.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $12.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program.
More than 1.3 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
