Mary Crippen of Richmond Hill joined teachers from around the world earlier this summer at the Honeywell Educators at Space Academy program in June at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala.
Teachers participated in 45 hours of simulated astronaut training and professional development, as well as an intensive educator curriculum focused on space science and exploration.
“The program was geared toward science, but I loved it,” said Crippen, who teaches sixth-grade math at Richmond Hill Middle School. “As a teacher, it was about using a very high level of problem-solving skills.”
Crippen said she got to try her hand at all sorts of projects she’d never done before: making polymers; building a water-filtration system that recycled water to 99 percent pure; building robots, rovers and landing gears; and more.
