Hundreds of folks gathered on both ends of the county over the holiday weekend to pay tribute to those who have served and given their lives in the nation’s armed forces.

On the southern end of the county, more than 100 gathered Monday under shaded oak trees in J.F. Gregory Park on Monday to mark the day, while about 60 came together Saturday in Pembroke for the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit’s ninth annual Memorial Day observance program and the dedication of two flags for local World War II veterans, Theron "Johnny" Kramer and Charles L. Strickland.
