A gas leak near the old Bryan County Courthouse Annex in Richmond Hill shutdown the eastbound lane of traffic Thursday for about two hours.

A gas leak near the old Bryan County Courthouse Annex Building off Highway 144 has been repaired.

According to Richmond Hill Fire Department Assistant Chief Andy Burriss, construction workers digging in the area accidentally struck a marked gas line around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The incident was cleared up by about 1:30 p.m., he said.

"The gas company came and got it capped off and got the gas stopped and made sure they (workers) knew not to dig there anymore," he said.

Richmond Hill Fire and Police Departments monitored the area and shut down the eastbound lanes of Highway 144 until Atlanta Gas Light could repair the leak.

“We were just on standby until the gas company could get there,” he said. “We made sure we didn’t give it an ignitable source and I guess we did a good job because we’re all still here.”

A nearby doctor's office was evacuated, Burriss said, but no injuries were reported during the incident.

The Courthouse Annex building was far enough away from the incident it didn’t need to be evacuated, he said.
