Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that burned a home and at 45 Meadows Road on Monday morning in south Bryan County, Bryan County Emergency Services Director Freddy Howell said.

Howell said BCES firefighters were dispatched to the home at 5:25 a.m., where they found a single story brick home “with flames through the roof in the left rear corner and heavy smoke pushing from the soffit vents of the entire house.”

The homeowner was outside when firefighters arrived and told them he woke up to the sound of a smoke detector going off – “proving that smoke detectors save lives,” Howell said.

The house was a total loss, he said. The American Red Cross was notified.
