Accident closes Highway 280 Monday morning

An accident involving a pickup truck and a tanker truck closed a portion of Highway 280 near Highway 204 for several hours early Monday morning, according to Bryan County Emergency Services.

The incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. and closed westbound Highway 280. Vehicles traveling eastbound on Highway 280, including traffic headed to Lanier Primary School, were able to go around the scene using Highway 204 and Little Creek Road.

BCES Deputy Chief Michael Dick said the tanker ran over the front passenger side of the pickup.

“It was heavily damaged and took a while to extricate the driver of the pickup,” he said. “There were no fatalities, but the driver was badly injured.”

Dick added that while the rear two axles of the tanker truck were ripped apart from the frame, the tanker was empty and therefore no spill occurred.

Names are not being released as the accident remains under investigation.
