A national honor for a local hero

A group of Bryan County firefighters joined Oct. 7 family of Terry Nielsen, a fallen member of the Bryan County Fire Department, at the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md., as Nielsen’s name was added to the National Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial Wall during a special ceremony.

Capt. Jeff Nielsen, third from left, Kathy Nielsen and Jeffrey Nielsen, along with Robert Jordan, Stephen Woods, South Division Chief Mike Smith, Capt. Ron Becker, Capt. Asa Clay and Southside Fire Department Chaplain Dale Simmons, were on hand for the ceremony.

Nielsen, who served as a volunteer firefighter with the Bryan County Fire Department, died in September 2010 after he developed necrotizing fasciitis during a training exercise that June.
