An accident between a car and a truck on Hwy. 204 near Morgan’s Bridge, in Chatham County, resulted in a truck bursting into flames and one fatality. The accident occurred around 1 p.m. Friday.

No names had been released late Friday afternoon.

According to Judy Pal with Savannah-Chatham Metro Police, there were two people in the car and three in the truck, and the car passenger, a female, died at the scene. The other four individuals were taken to Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Bryan County Administrator Phil Jones was driving by shortly after the collision, and he observed the carnage.

"When I got there, there were people outside of the truck and on the side of road," Jones said. "One person was trapped in the car and the truck was engulfed. The heat was so intense that you could not get near the car."

Jones hooked up chains to the car and pulled it about 25 feet away from the burning truck. He then tried to open the door, but could not. A police officer ended up breaking a window out to get the person, the driver, out of the car.
