All are invited to play in the Commanding General’s Golf Scramble at Taylors Creek Golf Course on Friday. You and your fellow players will have a chance to win a prize on every hole, including pro shop items and various gift cards to restaurants and stores.

The four-person scramble starts at 8 a.m. The $45 per person cost includes green and cart fees, range balls, lunch, prizes and course contest.

Father's Day at Corkan

‘Minions’ under the stars

“Minions,” PG, is the next in the Holbrook Pond Movies Under the Stars series. It will be shown June 24 and lasts 102 minutes.

The movies are free and begin at sunset. Popcorn and drinks will be available for sale. Movie-goers should bring chairs or blankets.

• Aug. 20: “Inside Out,” PG, (112 minutes).

• Sept. 17: “Jurassic World,” PG-13, (124 minutes).

Bass tournaments

Bidd Sands Lake, in the Evans County Public Fishing Area, is the site for the fourth of five catch-and-release Marne Trail Bass Tournaments. It will be on June 25 and anglers will meet at 5:15 a.m. Fishing begins at 5:30.

It costs $20 for active duty, DOD cardholders, retirees and youth; $30 for civilians. There is a boat fee of $5. Participants must have a Georgia Outdoor Recreation Pass, which costs $3.50 and is good for three days, or a Wildlife Management Area endorsement on their Georgia fishing/hunting license.

Cash prizes are $250 for first-place (total weight, five-fish maximum) and $100 for the largest bass. Door prizes awarded after weigh-in at 11 a.m.

Dinner and bowling

Families get a discount on dinner and bowling at Stewart Bowling Center from noon-7 p.m. June 26. For $30, a family of five gets two games per person, shoe rental, and dinner. For more information, call 912-767-4273.

 

Independence Day

The public is invited to join Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield to celebrate Independence Day.   

Hunter’s celebration will be on July 1 at Family Day Field beginning at 8 p.m. Patriotic music will be provided by the 3rdID band and will be followed by a fireworks display. For information, call 912-315-5078.    

Fort Stewart will celebrate the nation’s birthday on July 4 on Cottrell Field with a Salute to the Nation starting at 8:30 p.m. It will feature patriotic music by the 3rdID Band and a 50-gun salute. The artillery battery will fire one round for each of the 50 states as the Voice of the Marne narrator gives a history. A fireworks display will close the celebration. Red, White and Blue Scramble

Start Independence Day with the nine-hole, Red, White and Blue 4th of July Golf Scramble at Taylors Creek Golf Course. Registration opens at 7 a.m. and play begins at 8.

It will be on the course’s back nine. The front nine will be closed as fireworks are put in place for the Salute to the Nation.

Float trip

Enjoy the outdoors, at a leisurely pace, during a Leisure Travel Kayak Float Trip July 9 on a Coastal Georgia waterway.

The cost is $20 per person and includes transportation to the start and end point for the trip. Youth under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Paddlers must be at least 12. Participants are asked to bring a sack lunch and water/beverages. Limited number of two-person kayaks available.

White water rafting

Register now for an overnight trip to the National White Water Center in North Carolina. Depart at 5 a.m. July 16. From 7-10 p.m. that evening, a band will perform. Food and drinks for sale. Lodging will be at a Holiday Inn Express, which will serve a breakfast the next morning. Cost is $150 per person. Option to visit Carowinds at additional cost will be offered. Read for the Win

Children in Kindergarten through 8th grade are invited to stop by George P. Hays Library during June and July to participate in the free self-paced Read for the Win program. Children receive prizes when they reach reading milestones, and there are various activities, such as stories, presentations and demonstrations.
