God helps us with the big choices

I enjoy reading and writing. I have a good time writing this column. I try to make it “folksy” — that is, to share with you real life experiences and see how we can find God at work in the midst of those experiences.

I think it is tragic that many people truly cannot see the Lord in their lives. Many are convinced that religion is OK, but just don’t try to introduce it to the real world. But I want you to consider something. If there is no God, then the things I am writing and saying are completely meaningless.

I get that. I have said more than once that if someone were to find the body of Jesus, then all church buildings and property should be sold, and we should all disband immediately. If he is not alive, then we are wasting our time. Paul said that to the Corinthian church in his first letter to them: “If Christ is not raised from the dead, then your faith is empty.”

But if what I am saying about God is true, and if Jesus really is alive, then really nothing else matters as much as that. And if there is a true creator God who not only made the world, but continues to sustain it; and if he has intervened in this world by sending his son to die for our sins; and if he now is alive again and coming again to judge the world and to reward his children — if all of that is true, then how you respond to his invitation to join his family is the most important decision you will ever make.

I have made some really important choices in life. Where will I go to college? Will I go to college? Who will I marry? What will I do for a living? Where will I live? But not one of these questions matters more than this one: What will I do about Jesus? Until that choice is made, nothing else matters at all.

Here is the significant thing. Once I choose to follow Christ, he will help me with all of those other things. He will show me what to do about my education. He will guide me to a spouse. He will lead me to a job and a place to live. All of the practical things of life that cause me to lose sleep are important to the Lord. And I don’t have to lose sleep over them, because the Lord is in control.

Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” In other words, he will take care of you. Sometimes, we find it hard to trust the Lord. We don’t want to wait on him. But he has a plan for our lives. You can trust him. He has been found to be faithful. He will continue to be faithful.

You can trust him.
