Concept of good, evil is very real

“Woe unto those who call good evil and evil good.” I saw those words posted on Facebook recently. Yes, I have a Facebook page, but that is a story for another day.
Back to my story: I found the responses and conversation that day to be quite interesting. A couple of people asked the poster where she had found these words. If you do not know, they come from the book of Isaiah.
What was encouraging to me was that she had heard me quote these words in a sermon. It is always exciting for a pastor to learn that someone is listening.
But another thing that caught my eye was when someone else responded that those words were meaningless because there is no such thing as good and evil. There is no such thing as right and wrong.
You may not know it, but this is a very popular belief today. And I just want to say, “Really?” Do you really believe that?
Here is a scenario to consider: What if I come to your house, kick your dog, slap your mother, spank your baby, take your stuff and then burn down your house? Will you continue to claim that there is no such thing as right and wrong? Will you still say that right and wrong is relative?
Let me tell you this – don’t come to my house and kick my dog, much less any of the other things I mentioned.
I will not let you do it.  And you know why? Not just because I don’t like for you to do these things, I’ll do all I can to stop you because these things are wrong. They are evil! They are bad.
The bottom line is this: Those who espouse the idea that everything is relative have a couple of problems they have not considered.
When they say, “Nothing is right or wrong; nothing is true or false,” they are defeating their own argument because they cannot say that their own statement is right or true or good. This is what philosophers call a “self-defeating argument.”
Another problem is that you simply cannot live life that way. If nothing is right or wrong, then police officers are unnecessary. Laws do not matter. And you can do as you please when you please. But then so can everyone else. And you won’t like it when they do that.
The fact is that there is a right and wrong. There is a true and false. There is a good and bad.
“Who defines these things?” you ask. God does. He made the world, and he made the rules. We are to do as he tells us to do.
“Woe unto those who call good evil and evil good.” You may not like it. But it still is true.
