A few months ago our church entered into a relationship with another church in our state. They became our "mentoring" church. Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula is very large church located about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta. God has blessed their ministry in amazing ways over the last 30 years. And they have chosen to seek to pass those blessings along to other churches.
In recent weeks staff members from Hebron have visited our church and taught our Sunday School teachers. They have met with me as well. Next month I will be visiting their church to learn more about how they operate. This relationship will last for a minimum of one year.
Why do I you tell you this? Because it was a humbling experience for us to admit that Hebron Church could help us. But I know of a number of other churches that have received assistance from them. There are times when we simply need a new perspective to help us accomplish what God wants us to do. Asking for help is very important.
We all know how difficult it is to stop and ask for directions when we are lost. We want to do things for ourselves. Even little boys and girls will often say, "I’ll do it by myself." But in many ways the gospel is all about this one thing. We must admit that we need help, and that God is the One who can help us.
Most of us know that Karl Marx once called religion "the opiate of the masses." Others have called Christianity a crutch. The implications are that only the weak would choose to follow God. We must do things on our own.
The problem with this philosophy is simple. In some ways, we are weak. We are not able to deal with our sin problem alone. We do need help. And the Lord Jesus has offered the help that we need. He took upon Himself all of our sins. But we must humble ourselves enough to accept the free gift of forgiveness.
How about it? What do you think? The fact is simple. We are all sinners. That does not mean that we are as terrible and horrible and awful as we could be. But it does mean that we fall short of God’s plan for us. We need His help, and He offers it freely. In order to deal with our sin we must confess it to God, ask for His forgiveness, and commit ourselves to follow Him. Will you do it? Admit you need the help, and call on the One who is able to give it. You’ll never regret it. May God bless and guide you on your journey.
