The Bryan County High School Science Club and the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the high school gym in Pembroke.
The community is invited to come out and make a donation to “help save a life.”

Budget workshop
The Richmond Hill City Council will hold a budget workshop at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 40 Richard Davis Drive. The council's regular meeting will follow at 7:30 p.m.

McTeacher’s Night   
McDonald’s is hosting Richmond Hill Elementary School for a McTeacher’s Night from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the restaurant by Publix on Hwy. 144 south of Richmond Hill.
McDonald’s will donate 20 percent of all sales during the McTeacher Night to Richmond Hill Elementary School.
Teachers and staff will be working at the restaurant for the evening, cleaning the dining room, greeting customers and handing out food at the drive-through window.

Homeschool meeting
Steve and Teri Maxwell and family will host the Encouragement for the Homeschool Family Conference from 7-9:30 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 22 at Bloomingdale Alliance Church on Hwy. 80 in Bloomingdale. The conference is free.

Church barbecue
The annual Old Time BBQ is from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 22 at Ellabell United Methodist Church at 3113 Hwy. 204.
There will be pork and chicken plates with such side dishes as potato salad, snap beans, stew, bread and extra sauce. The cost is $7 per plate.
There also will be cakes, pies, cookies and other home-cooked sweets for sale in addition to a silent auction.

Candle lantern tour
Fort McAllister State Historic Park is having a candle lantern tour from 7-8 p.m. Oct. 22.
Tour the fort by candlelight and see Civil War soldiers going through their nightly duties. Do not bring flashlights. The cost is $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for children.

Veteran salute
Bryan Neck Missionary Baptist Church will host a “Season to Salute Veterans” event at 4 p.m. Oct. 22 at the church at 16525 Hwy. 144.
All veterans, active-duty military, family and friends are invited to join an expression of Christian love to those who have served followed by an appreciation dinner.
The guest speaker will be retired U.S. Army Chaplain Archie Edward Simmons, the current senior pastor of House of Bread International Christian Fellowship and Ministries of Savannah. Attire is casual.

New Beginnings Community Church will hold a fall-harvest celebration from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at 75 Crosswinds Drive, at the entrance to Buckhead North.
Activities planned include hay rides, hot-dog roasting, face painting, games and prizes. All activities are free and open to the public.

Book signing set for Pembroke Public Library
J.G. Jakes, author of “The River’s Edge,” will have a book signing from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Pembroke Public Library.
When asked to sum up in one sentence what kind of story “The River’s Edge” is, Jakes said, “It’s an altogether human story: love and hatred, regret and forgiveness, faith and consequences and a cross.”
“The River’s Edge” is about an evil man, a horrible murder, a miscarriage of backwoods justice and a young woman’s vow of revenge.
Jakes was born and raised in Shellman. She now is a retired school teacher.  
“It is my genuine desire to share the grace of God and encourage others as they continue on their Christian journey,” Jakes said.

Fall art show, reception planned for Nov. 8
Arts on the Coast will have its fall art show and reception at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, on the grounds surrounding Leahy Art Gallery in Richmond Hill.
