Help the Ogeechee

Twenty percent of all proceeds from the exhibition Impasto: New Paintings by Andy Cherewick and Hannah Jones at the 2CarGarage Contemporary Art Gallery will be donated to the local Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper organization.

The exhibition starts Friday, June 6, and continues through June 30 at the Savannah gallery. The exhibition will open with a reception Friday from 6-8 p.m. at 2CarGarage, located on Broughton Street above the Paris Market. The reception is free and open to the public and the artists will be in attendance. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, noon-6 p.m. and by appointment. The Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper is a non-profit, grassroots organization dedicated to protecting, preserving and ensuring clean water through the entire Ogeechee River Basin. These rivers support a diversity of wildlife, offer many opportunities for recreation, supply water for agricultural and industrial uses and carry off wastewater.

Pembroke Library

The Pembroke Public Library will host Charlotte Sauers, the author of The Bee in Bondelle's Bow, Thursday, June 12 at 11 a.m. Sauers will read excerpts from her book and will present a "beeautiful" crafts program for children. Signed copies of the book will be available.

Lunch and Learn

The Alzheimer’s Association is holding a Lunch and Learn on Thursday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This event will be held at the Alzheimer’s Association regional office, 201 Television Circle, Savannah. There is a connection between people with Down syndrome and their likelihood in getting Alzheimer’s disease. Professionals and Family Caregiver’s are welcome to attend this free training. Topics will include diagnosis, coping, changes in behavior, treatment and medication, access to resources, relationships, stigma and community involvement. Cheer camp

The 2nd Annual Coastal Cheer Camp will be July 28-Aug. 1 from 8:30 a.m.-noon at the Richmond Hill High School, hosted by the RHHS Cheerleader Booster Club.

The camp will be for girls ages 4-13, conducted by RHHS varsity football/competition cheerleaders and coaches. The cheer camp is for ages 4-10, with instruction to include cheers, chants, pom-pom routines, motions, crowd participation, techniques and more. The tryout clinic is for girls ages 11-13 with prep for school cheerleading tryouts including jumps, motions, cheers, chants, crowd participation, techniques and more.

Early registration is before July 25 for $60, late registration is $75, and includes a t-shirt, cheer medal, pom-poms and a daily snack. All girls will have the opportunity to cheer before the start of a RHHS varsity football game next season. The l

Revolutionary War

"Revolutionary War Savannah: Beyond Spring Hill" by Rita Elliott will be presented June 7 at 1 p.m. at the Savannah-Ogeechee Canal Museum Pavilion, 681 Fort Argyle Rd. (Rt. 204) 2.3 miles past I-95. The talk will feature the latest discoveries about the 1779 Battle of Savannah during the Revolutionary War. It is sponsored by the Coastal Georgia Archaeological Society. Undersea adventure

Coastal Community Christian Church will kick off the summer on Saturday, June 7, with an Undersea Family Adventure. There will be Bible stories, crafts, games, snacks and inflatables from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church. Children ages 4 through fifth grade, along with their parents, are invited to this free event.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration is not required but it is encouraged. Families may register by calling 756-3455.

Moving Wall

The Moving Wall group has several upcoming meetings scheduled. If you are interested in finding out more or becoming a volunteer to help out, please feel free to attend or contact Jan Bass at jbass@coastalnow.net.

There are four different days for volunteers to participate in orientation – they are only required to attend one of the four dates. All meetings will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce office and will not exceed one hour. Wednesday, June 4; Thursday, June 5; Saturday, June 7 and Monday, June 9.

Magnolia Manor

Magnolia Manor on the Coast will host David McKay of Government Benefits Analysts, Inc. of Savannah. He will speak on qualifying for VA benefits. The event is slated for June 10 at 3:30 p.m and will be at Magnolia Manor on the Coast on the 2nd floor and refreshments will be served. Ranger Camp

Ft. McAllister’s Junior Ranger Camp, for children ages 8–12, will be June 23-27 from 9 a.m. to noon. Junior Rangers will experience nature first-hand, exploring Georgia’s fascinating history while enjoying outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking Fort McAllister’s scenic trails as part of the GO (Get Outdoors) Georgia program. Sand Hill VBS

Historical lecture

On Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m., best selling author, William C. Harris, Jr. will be speaking at the Richmond Hill Museum. Harris, a native of Savannah, draws on his experiences and local knowledge to weave tales of intrigue and suspense based on local history. He has just completed his third book, which uses the well known Tybee Bomb incident and a hurricane as its theme. A book signing will take place after the lecture. Down on the Farm

Pembroke Assembly of God invites everyone to join them for some "Down on the Farm" fun as they learn how to grow the Fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

Each evening, June 16-20, from 6:30-9 p.m., there will be a Bible lesson, music, crafts, games, snacks and a "Down on the Farm" activity.

Reading club

Join the Summer Reading Club at the Richmond Hill Library on Ford Avenue.

The club is designed for children ages 2-17. Each participant will receive a reading log to keep track of their reading and can earn prizes while "Catching the Reading Bug."

Catch the Reading Bug events will be held at the Richmond Hill High School on Wednesdays at 2 p.m., with programs for all ages. The June events include Sean Driscoll, Sail on the Storyship; Donna Washington, Folktales and Fairytales; Bob Linsmayer, Singing Storyteller; Ron Anglin, Quite a Catch; and Chad Crews, Truly Magical.

CSI camp

CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) Camp will be available in Savannah this summer for rising 5th through rising 9th grade students. The camp runs from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. daily from the weeks of June 9-13 and June 16-20 at the Savannah Country Day School. There are limited slots available.
