The USA channels Mr. Robot is on Blu-ray and DVD this week.
Mr. Robot: Season 1 (USA/Universal, 2015, two-disc Blu-ray/three-disc DVD, 10 episodes, deleted scenes, featurette, bloopers). One of the most acclaimed new series of last year is this cyber-thriller, which also earned a Golden Globe last weekend for best dramatic TV series.
Rami Malek, known primarily for supporting roles in such films as the Night at the Museum franchise and the last Twilight picture, as well as notable appearances on such TV shows as 24" and The War at Home, stars here as a cyber-security engineer with anxiety issues who joins a vigilante hacker group, led by the mysterious Mr. Robot (Christian Bale, who recently won a supporting actor Golden Globe for this role).
Quirky and highly entertaining, this show is also undeniably timely and, in its own way, rather scary as it delves into a world were all involved in but few of us really understand.
The Wonder Years: The Complete Fourth Season (Time Life, 1990-91, four discs, 23 episodes, featurette). This season, Kevin (Fred Savage) and Winnie (Danica McKellar) are in love in the ninth grade but at different schools. This Time Life release is highlighted by the restoration of the pop songs used in the original series by such artists as The Beach Boys, Nat King Cole, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, etc. Alley Mills, Dan Lauria, Olivia dAbo and Robert Picardo co-star.
The American Invasion (PBS, 2015). This 90-minute documentary looks at the military might and social changes brought to Great Britain during World II with the arrival of the U.S. Air Force. Personal stories from survivors make for a more intimate than usual exploration of the subject.
Frontline: Immigration Battle (PBS, 2015). This documentary attempts to get to the bottom of across-the-aisle negotiations in Congress regarding immigration reform and to understand why policymaking among our leaders in Washington is such a struggle.
Off the Menu: Asian America (PBS, 2015). This hourlong road-trip documentary explores Asian-Pacific food and what it says about the ethnic group that enjoys it in such diverse areas as Texas, New York, Wisconsin and Hawaii.
Duck Dynasty: Wedding Special (A&E/Lionsgate, 2014-15, two episodes, featurette). Phil and Miss Kay renew their vows on their anniversary in Till Duck Do Us Part, and John Luke and Mary Kate tie the knot in John Luke Gets Hitched.
Sabans Power Rangers: Dion Charge: Unleashed (Lionsgate, 2015, four episodes). Episodes included are Powers From the Past, Past, Present and Fusion, A Fools Hour and Return of the Caveman.
Captain Jake and the Never Land Pirates: The Great Never Sea Conquest (Disney, 2015, four episodes, two bonus episodes). Episodes of the animated series include the title show, Into the Heart of Coldness, Escape From Ghost Island and The Golden Hook.
Reading Rainbow: Miss Nelson is Back (PBS Kids, 1993-2005, four episodes). LeVar Burton stars in this PBS series that encourages kids to read, with guest readers Helen Mirren, Naomi Judd, Brian Dennehy and Ruth Buzzi.
