Pre-kindergarten students at Richmond Hill Montessori School got a treat Tuesday morning when state Rep. Ron Stephens, R-Savannah, stopped by to visit with students and teachers as a part of Georgia Pre-K Week.
Richmond Hill Montessori School was chosen by Voices of Georgia, a nonprofit organization that advocates children and youth of all ages, to have a state representative read to students.
Stephens, who said he is a believer in the pre-K programs, gave out handshakes and high-fives to children and was enthusiastic as he read “Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes.”
“Brains are developing at such a rapid rate,” he said. “And in my mind, this is more important in pre-K programs than in the university system because if they don’t develop now, they won’t be ready for the university system.”
Stephens also said he enjoyed reading to the children because it gives him feedback for when he reads to his 2-year-old grandson.
