jw-teacher-of-year

Editor’s note: Today marks the fourth installment in a series of profiles on the 2009 teachers of the year, by school. We will end with a profile on the systemwide teacher of the year.

Name: Ferra Brown

School: Lanier Primary

Subject taught: First grade

Personal:

I have been married to Steven Brown for 11 years. We have one son, Jake. He is 3 years old. I have lived in Pembroke my entire life. I enjoy reading, working in my yard, and scrapbooking. I love to go on vacations with my family.

Professional:

In 1998, I completed my student teaching at Lanier Primary School and received a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Armstrong Atlantic State University. In 2002, I received a master’s degree in early childhood education from Armstrong Atlantic State University.

In 2005, I received a specialist degree in reading education from Georgia Southern University.

What made you choose to get into teaching?

As a senior at Bryan County High School in 1995, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I "grew up." When it was time to sign up for classes for my last year of school, I decided Mrs. Gwen Futch’s Child Care Development Class was my best choice. I did not know that a child care class would affect the rest of my life. It was love at first sight. I adored the children and enjoyed every aspect of the classroom.
