The Wildcats boys basketball team hosted both teams from Effingham County over the weekend and sent both back north with losses.
First, the Wildcats (3-2) used a strong second-half surge to beat South Effingham 64-54. On Saturday, RHHS edged the Rebels 37-36 and coach William Altman got both a strong defensive effort and a breakout game from Lorenza Ross. The senior guard led all scorers with 17 points and helped to hand the Rebels (3-1) their first loss of the season.
On Friday, the Wildcats struggled early to shoot over the South Effingham (1-4) zone defense and the Mustangs kept the game close through the half.
Richmond Hill went to the locker room with a 29-27 lead but only because Vernon Jackson heated up in the second period to score nine of his game-high 17 points.
