Athletes from both ends of the county made a strong showing at a meet on April 9 in Pembroke. The event also included participants from Effingham and South Effingham High Schools.

"I thought we did very well in our last tune-up before region," BCHS track coach Blake Nesmith said. "Several athletes turned in personal best times, and I look for strong performances at region this week."

RHHS assistant track coach Levi Sybert was also pleased with the performance of his players.

"Though there were not as many winners this week, the team across the board improved tremendously in their respective events," Sybert said. "Many athletes ran substantial personal records in their events. With so many meets being cancelled this year, we have been able to work hard at practice more often this season."

For BCHS, first place finishers were Justin Bostick (shot put), Willie Deloach (long jump) and Winston Johnson (triple jump and 300 meter hurdle). Their Region 3-A tournament starts today with field events and preliminaries with the finals to take place Friday, both at Southeast Bulloch.

For RHHS, individual first place finishers were David Cassidy (1600 meter and 3200 meter races), Matt Gaddy (400 meter) and Shaquille Walker (800 meter). Also, both the boys and girls won their 4x400 meter relay. The boys team included Cassidy, Walker, Gaddy and Garrett Vertullo while the girls team included Ariel Cassidy, Shevonne Cunningham, Janell McKinney and Jillian Yontz. Personal bests were achieved by Patricia Martinez, Chelsey Callahan, Jason Cassidy, Brandon Gramazio and Karl Hunter.

The RHHS girls will run their region meet this coming Friday and Saturday at Cross Creek, in Augusta. The first day is preliminary qualifying for Saturday, where the top two athletes per event will move on to the state finals. The boys will run their region meet in the same fashion the following week at Burke County High School.
