Teams still needed for golf tourney

Organizers of this weekend’s Second Annual Richmond Hill Gridiron Association Golf Tournament at Crosswinds Golf Club are looking for more teams to participate in order to meet their goal.

Gridiron Booster President Ricky Bodaford said the proceeds from this event will go directly toward purchasing new uniforms for the RHHS football team, which he said are in dire need of replacement. The booster club has committed to pay $10,750 toward the uniforms with the school’s athletic fund to pick up the balance. He said 200 jerseys, two per player, will be purchased at $85 per jersey.

"The away game jerseys are completely shot, and the home jerseys need replacing as well," Bodaford said. "Our goal is to make more than we did last year which was just over $10,000. We need more golfers to come out in order to do this."

Gridiron Vice President Steve Wyatt said players can simply come out to Crosswinds all the way up to the start time of 8:45 a.m. this Saturday, May 17 in order to participate. Crosswinds is located next to the Savannah Airport, off I-95 exit 104. It costs $400 for a team of four to play. A catered continental breakfast by Perkins Restaurant and a buffet lunch by Southern Image are included.

"To date we have 20 team commitments," Wyatt said. "We ended up with 25 teams last year or 100 golfers. Our goal this year is to max the course out with 36 teams or 144 golfers."

There are trophies and tons of high dollar prizes to be won by participating golfers. Here are some of the prizes up for grabs: four rounds of golf at four different local courses, all-you-can-eat-and-drink wing party for 10 at Hooters, numerous gift certificates from local restaurants, sunset yacht cruise for six, and much more. Hole-in-one contests will take place with prizes to include a Harley Davidson motorcycle, flat screen TV, golf clubs, airline tickets and $250,000 cash.

Wyatt said there is still time to become a sponsor for the event, but Thursday is the last day in which to do so. This includes three more available spots for tent hole sponsorships for a cost of $300. Already slated to have tents set up at the course are Publix, Harley-Davidson, First Bank of Coastal GA, Southeastern Orthopedic Center, and Perkins Restaurant. Hole sponsorships cost $100.
