Richmond Hill Wildcat baseball player Matt Schlag is on a roll. After being voted as the team’s MVP earlier this month, he was recently selected as a member of the Georgia Dugout Club 2007 All State Southeast All-Stars Team.
The Southeast Team is managed by Hank Aldridge of Swainsboro and coached by Jimmy Brown of Brunswick.
His team competed against five other teams from around the state in the Memorial Day weekend All-State Tournament. The tournament is designed to give the State’s top graduating seniors a chance to showcase their skills in front of college and pro scouts.
Round robin games were played Saturday and Sunday at Kennesaw Mountain High School and the medal games played on Monday at McEachern High School in Powder Springs.
In a double header on Saturday, the Southeast All-Stars won their first game against Northeast All-Stars by a score of 6-3. Schlag earned the save, pitching three innings in relief and allowing no earned runs on three hits, with seven strikeouts and no walks.
In the second game, a pourous defense and Southeast’s bullpen could not hold the lead as they fell 9-6 to Atlanta West All-Stars. This loss put the Southeast team into the Bronze medal game against the Northwest All-Stars.
Schlag’s team put together a solid effort and beat Northwest by a score of 10-0.
Matt pitched the final inning to showcase his talents one last time. After the game, the teams received their Bronze Medals from Georgia Dugout Club Coach Eddie Ashley.
