The Lady Wildcat cross country team once again had a top five finish, placing fourth at an Oct. 24 meet at Savannah Country Day. The boys placed ninth.

Although this meet did not result in the first or second placing they have become accustomed to as of late, Coach Jimmy Hires is confident of a state berth for the girls, which will be decided today at the region meet in Effingham County, with a 4 p.m. start.

The girls are going in as defending champs, having won the top region spot the last two years.

"We’re without (last year’s top runner Glorili) Alejandro due to injury. Alina Gonzales has been out a week with a soccer injury. They are two of our top runners," Hires said. "This may hinder our chances for the title, but we’ve still got a lot of talent. Enough so that we should be in the top four which would earn us the right to go to state."

The top runners for the girls at the SCD meet, in order of finishing, were: Lindsey Vasher, Gini Russell, Katie Berry, Kaitlyn Uhlig, Anna Bausum, Azea Mustafa, Lauren Hall, Janell McKenzie, Katie Bergsmith and Caitlyn Kelly.

The top finishers for the boys were: David Cassidy, Justin Caulkins, Brett Tuten, Jimmy Gardner, Will Rhyne, Chase Feus, Cody Hall and James Berry.
