Wildcat wrestlers on track
Richmond Hill High School wrestling coach Robert Parker had high expectations heading into the season.
Halfway through, those expectations haven’t changed.
“We really are wrestling well and the kids are coming around,” said Parker, whose Wildcats sport a 16-5 record heading into a weekend match at Battery Creek, S.C.
“We’ve had some health issues, had to fight through the flu, but the kids are in great shape and for the most part where I’d like them to be.”
He wasn’t entirely happy with the Wildcats performance in the region duals last weekend — the Wildcats pasted Glynn, lost a 39-30 heartbreaker against Effingham and were drilled 60-12 by the Gators.
“Maybe we left it all on the mat against Effingham,” Parker said. “I’ll tell you what though, if they compete like they did against Effingham every time we go out, I’ll be the happiest coach in America.”
He’s also gotten senior leadership from Zach Bringer, William Benson and Zach Perez — something he wanted to make sure to mention.
“I can’t be any more pleased with the leadership I’ve gotten out of them,” Parker said.
With the addition of both heavyweight Alex Martinez and 160-pounder Logan Rooker, the team’s lineup is “solidifying,” Parker said.
“And we’re hosting the region tournament this year, so I’m thinking we’ve got a chance of getting around eight guys to state this year. We really have got a shot at it. We’ve got guys who are solid.”
