Richmond Hill High School got the 2014 tennis season started right Feb. 6 with a boys’ and girls’ sweep of Brunswick High School.
The girls were led by senior Makella Bergsmith, who defeated Kristen Dougherty ,6-1, 6-1; junior Caroline Cox defeated Bambi Mavromat, 6-0, 6-0; and sophomore Haley Smith defeated Leigh Barbar, 6-1, 6-0.
In the doubles competition, junior Savi Williams and freshman Veronica Cox defeated Je’lea Wiley and Jailyn Hill, 6-0, 6-0; senior Kaitlyn Watley and sophomore Sarah Smith defeated Ayanna Courtney and Tamyia Bess, 6-0, 6-1 as RHHS won 5-0.
On the boys’ side, sophomore Kevin Zhu defeated Ronnie Austin, 6-1, 6-1; senior Ade Sobowale defeated Zach Boone, 6-3, 6-4; and freshman Logan Sawyer won by default.
In doubles the freshman team of Cameron Pipes and Mason Murphy defeated Cliff Davis and Beck McGee, 6-1, 6-0: and sophomore Niko Stamper and Freshman Jacob Jones defeated Jay Nichols and John Lilliston, 6-1, 6-3.
Both the girls and boys team are 1-0. They play host to Savannah Christian at 4 p.m. Thursday.
