Bryan County High School football standouts Nick Scott and Damion Dixon have been playing football together since both were just kids.
Wednesday, the close friends ensured they’d be on the same team next season by signing letters of intent to play football and attend school at Albany State College.
“I’m playing linebacker, he’s going to be safety,” said Dixon, an all Region 2-AA performer last season, moments before a ceremony in the BCHS media center. “It’s an opportunity for both of us to play together and we’ll have an early opportunity to play. Both were important.”
Scott, the Region 2-AA player of the year in 2013 and a two-time McDonald’s/Bryan County News Player of the Year pick who rushed for more than 3,000 yards during his Redskin career, echoed that sentiment.
“We’re best friends and I wanted to play on the same team with him in college,” Scott said. “We’ve played together since we were 11, 12, and to get the opportunity to keep playing with him the next four years is a blessing.”
Both Dixon and Scott had options.
Limestone (S.C.) College and Jacksonville University were interested in signing both, and Georgia Southern reportedly looked at Scott.
But both said the atmosphere at Albany State and the coaching staff led by Mike Smith helped sway them toward the Division II powerhouse that has landed a dozen players in the NFL over the years.
“It was like family down there,” Dixon said.
