State tournament
The Richmond Hill High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will hit the road Friday night in the first round of the state Class AAAAA tournament.
The Wildcats take on No. 1 seed Northside-Columbus from Region 1-AAAAA at 7:30 p.m. in Columbus. The game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m., but it is the second game of a doubleheader.
The Lady Wildcats will travel to Lee County, the No. 2 seed from 1-AAAAA, at 6 p.m.
Both Bryan County High School’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are headed to the state tournament and will play games this weekends, but their opponents from Region 4-AA haven’t been announced. Weather has played havoc with region tournaments.
The Redskins and Lady Redskins are both No. 4 seeds from 2-AA., but for coach Mario Mincey, getting back to state is a good feeling.
“Our seniors, Rita Ivey and Kolbie Graves, played well during the Region 2-AA tournament and showed great leadership,” he said. “Kaylee Perks really stepped up and had season highs in points and rebounds. Julianne Brown and Yasmaine Crawford chipped in solid efforts on the defensive and the offensive ends.”
Mincey is no stranger to state competition, either. His program has been to state four times in the last five seasons.
It was a goal this year, he said.
“I am happy for the players and our coaching staff for all the work they have put in this year,” he said. “We will have a tough challenge as we will take on the No. 1 seed from Region 4-AA, but look forward to it.”

GS downs UGA
ATHENS — Aaron Mizell homered twice and drove in four runs as the Georgia Southern Eagles took the deciding Game Three 18-4 over the Georgia Bulldogs at Foley Field Sunday.
Mizell helped power the Georgia Southern (2-1) offense, which tallied 21 hits and posted its first 10 run inning since April 27, 2013. The Eagles jumped ahead 11-0 and scored all 11 runs in the top of the third inning.
GSU sent 16 batters to the plate in the third inning and tallied 10 hits to score the 11 runs. Dalton Busby sparked the rally after reaching first base on a strikeout and a wild pitch. Kody Adams followed with an infield hit, and Ben Morgan loaded the bases with a single. Mizell plated the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Mizell later capped off the inning with a two-run homer.
Morgan, Chase Griffin and Adams all tallied three hits and in total seven Eagles recorded multiple hits.
Pitching in relief of starter Ryan Frederick, Jason Richman picked up the win after tossing three innings in relief. Richman held Georgia (1-2) to two runs on five hits and struck out four batters. Richman (1-0) gave way to McCall in the sixth inning and the senior right hander tossed 3.1 scoreless frames to earn a save.
Patrick Boling (0-1) was unable to get out of the third inning and suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits.
The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
State wrestling
Richmond Hill High School wrestlers Zach Perez, Caleb Branham and Zach Bringer will compete in the state Class AAAAA traditional tournament this weekend in Gwinnett County.
All three qualified for state after faring well at the East Sectionals earlier this month.
Perez went 4-0 in the 152-pound weight class to win the East. Branham went 4-1 in the 220-pound class to place third and Bringer was 4-1 in the 132-pound class to qualify third. Perez and Bringer are seniors, Branham is a junior.
The tournament was bumped back a week due to severe weather.
Redskins tennis
Bryan County High School swept New Hampstead 5-0, 5-0 on Feb. 11 in a nonregion match in Pembroke.
In the boys’ match, Bryan County’s No. 1 singles player Jay Patel beat Alan Ware, 8-0; BCHS’ No. 2 player Channon Mingledorf blanked Joey Blalock, 8-0; and No. 3 singles player Jordan Crosby downed New Hampstead’s Christian Latchison, 8-2.
In doubles matches, Bryan County’s Cody Natvik and Hunter Hagan won the No. 1 doubles match by forfeit. Bryan County’s Noah Twiggs and Cody Croft picked up a win in No. 2 doubles by forfeit as well.
In the girls’ competition, BCHS’ No. 1 singles player Vivian Moultrie beat Haley Ware, 8-0; Bryan Cojnty’s Keyvona Moultrie beat Kaelyn Steel 8-0 in No. 2 singles and teammate Opal Warren won the No. 3 singles match by forfeit.
In No. 1 doubles, Bryan County’s Melissa Campbell and Alana Walker downed Paige Morris and Alyssa Patel, 8-1; BCHS’ Cassidy Williams and Lane Christian won the No. 2 doubles match 8-1 over Jada Cooper and Jordan Potts.
Gait analysis
Georgia Game Changers recently held a gait analysis clinic for runners. The clinic was led by Robbie Horstman of Coastal Therapy and included Clean Eats Gluten Free Bakery’s Courtney Due.
“We like to bring people together to help them ‘change their game,” said Georgia Game Changer owner Sandra Elliott. “In my mind, that includes both from a physical standpoint, as well as a nutritional one. Robbie and Courtney were able to do just that — have an impact on those who attended. First of all to learn more about how a gait analysis can help them identify certain movement dysfunctions that can in turn help them to improve their running form.”
