Richmond Hill alum Kevin Matthews has joined the Atlanta Braves organization and is pitching for the team’s Class A affiliate in Rome, Ga.
Matthews, a first-round pick by the Texas Rangers in 2011, signed last week after starting the season in the United Shore Professional Baseball League. The USPBL is a four-team league located in the metro Detroit area whose teams are not affiliated with any major league organizations.
Matthews was 2-1 in five starts this season in the USPBL with a 1.80 ERA and 43 strikeouts.
The 24-year-old lefty spent 2011 to 2015 in the Rangers’ farm system, missing the 2013 season and part of 2014 with a shoulder injury.
He has made one appearance for the Rome Braves so far, throwing two innings in relief Sunday while giving up two hits and striking out two.
