Richmond Hill High School Sailing had a strong start to its 2012-2013 season.

On Sept. 15 the team traveled to Charleston, S.C. and competed against 14 other teams, some from as far away as Raleigh, N.C.

Conditions were tough to start, with very light winds and a ripping current. A nice sea breeze finally filled in early in the afternoon. The RHHS A and B division sailors all looked impressive. Both divisions finished in 2nd place individually, but more importantly with their combined scores won the regatta.

Sailing for Richmond Hill in A division were returning juniors Dana Rohde and Ashley Pentecost. Returning seniors Austin Schneider and Ashley Kennedy sailed strong in B division.

The team also entered a B division JV team, sailed by Conner McCarthy, Erin Rowlings and Kayla Edwards.

The next weekend on Sept. 22, the team traveled to Brunswick to participate in a scrimmage against local Brunswick teams as well as one other Savannnah-area team.

Richmond Hill High School sailors finished the scrimmage in 2nd place.

Sailing in A division for the team were McCarthy and Schneider, who finished the day in 3rd place. Lizette Arnold and Kennedy had an impressive day on the race course, finishing in 1st place. Kayla Edwards also attended with the team and helped out by crewing for Brunswick, getting valuable experience. New team members Livia Chapman and Cecelia Giangiacomo supported the team from the dock.

On Sept. 22-23 the team also sent a sailor to the SAISA Cressy Singlehanded Championship and Qualifier for the High School Singlehanded Nationals. The event is sailed in the 1-person Laser. Dana Rohde represented Richmond Hill High School Sailing in the Laser Radial Division. Twenty-nine sailors competed for the top three spots, which move onto High School Nationals in November. Rohde looked strong, sailing very consistently. Competition was close with the results coming down to the last race. Rohde came out on top winning the regatta by 11 points. Rohde will represent Richmond Hill High School at the 2012/2013 Cressy National High School Championships Nov. 10-11 in Long Beach, Calif.
