Bryan County High School fell 20-13 in a Region 2-AA heartbreaker to Long County on Friday night in Ludowici.
The loss drops the Redskins to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in Region 2-AA. Long County improves to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the region.
Long County took a 7-0 lead on their first offensive possession with a 53-yard drive that culminated in a 5-yard touchdown jaunt by Blue Tide runner Josh Berry.
The Bryan County offense answered on the next possession when Nick Scott raced around left end for a 41-yard touchdown run and Ty Wilson kicked the extra point to tie it 7-7 with 5:27 on the first quarter clock.
Neither team scored again until late in the third quarter.
The Bryan County defense did a sufficient job of stopping the Blue Tide offense on several crucial downs and the Bryan offense begin to move the ball through the air in the third quarter. The Redskins put together an 80-yard touchdown drive that ended when Scott, who finished the night with 158 yards on 26 carries, plowed over a defender for an 11-yard touchdown run.
Wilson missed the PAT and Bryan County took the lead 13-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
The lead changed hands at the 6:30 mark of the fourth quarter when Long County faced a fourth-and-1 and Berry took the handoff and scooted up the middle on a 41-yard touchdown jaunt to tie the game 13-13.
The 2-point conversion run was stopped by Bryan County.
The game winning score for Long County came on a 24 yard pass play with 27 seconds remaining and the extra point was good and Long County held off a final Bryan County drive for the win.
"This was a tough game to lose," Bryan County coach Mark Wilson told his players after the game. "We had some young guys that had to step in and play and they did a good job. You gave great effort out here tonight and played with a lot of heart and I am proud of you for that."
The Bryan County offense generated 174 rushing yards and added 106 yards passing for a total of 280 yards on the night.
Bryan County is at home Friday against Benedictine. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
