Playoffs under way today

Softball, volleyball playoffs on tap
Local prep softball teams will take their first hopeful steps toward state titles this week.
Richmond Hill High School’s volleyball team will host Region 7-AAAAA’s No,. 3 seed, North Springs, on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the RHHS gym. The Lady Wildcats (21-16, 12-2) are the No. 2 seed from Region 3-AAAAA and are looking to advance to the second-round of the AAAAA tourney for the first time.
The Lady Wildcats softball team is also the No. 2 seed from 3-AAAAA and will play host to Lee County on Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at Lady Wildcat Field. The Lady Trojans (17-13) compete in Region 1-AAAAA. A game three will be played Friday, if necessary.
Bryan County High School (19-11) will travel to Roberta to take on Crawford County today on the Eagles in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs. Crawford County competes in Region 4-A. The teams will play a doubleheader today and a third game Thursday, if necessary.

Wildcats fare well at SCD
Richmond Hill High School’s cross country teams continued their season-long mastery of area schools. The Lady Wildcats and Wildcats both owned the top spots at an Oct. 10 meet at Savannah Country Day. The girls were led by senior Amanda Elliott, who turned in a time of 20 minutes, 8 seconds over the 3.2 mile course to place first. Teammates Rachel Hammesfahr and Emily Hollowell finished third and fifth, respectively, while Alycia Ussery took 10th.
In the boys’ race, Corey Joyner ran a 16:25 to take first and Tanner Hicks was second with a time of 17:17. The team hosts its annual Fishey XC Invitational at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Richmond Hill Fish Hatchery.
