New football coach to appear at basketball games

STATESBORO — Georgia Southern fans will have the opportunity to meet new Eagle football coach Tyson Summers at the basketball doubleheader tonight against Louisiana-Lafayette in Hanner Fieldhouse.

Fans can meet Summers in between games on the concourse by Section 6, and he will address the crowd at halftime of the men’s contest. The women’s game tips off at 5 p.m.; the men take the court at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

Other promotions set for tonight include:

• Blue Out (both games) — Wear Blue to the game

• Semester Tip-off (both games) ­— The student section will be bombarded with free T-shirts; the first 500 students receive a free rally towel, courtesy of The Hamptons; the first 100 students receive a free popcorn and drink; giveaway contest for a Georgia Southern cooler and a
$50 Tech Corner gift card (total value $200).

Going into tonight’s action, the GSU men’s team has a 5-9 overall mark and a 1-3 record in the Sun Belt Conference. The Eagles ended a three-game losing streak Saturday by beating Troy 93-88 in overtime at home.

Tookie Brown leads the team in scoring at 17.1 points per game.
The GSU women’s team is 4-9 overall and 1-3 in Sun Belt play. The Eagles have lost five of their last six games.

Angel McGowan leads the women’s team with 15.3 points per game.

Both GSU teams are back in action Saturday when they host Louisiana-Monroe starting at 2:30 p.m. On Tuesday, the squads go to Atlanta to face Georgia State. Action there begins at 5 p.m.
