Former Richmond Hill High School pitcher Kevin Matthews saw his first action in a minor league uniform Sunday.
Matthews, the Texas Rangers' top draft pick, allowed one hit and struck out one in an inning of work for the Arizona (Rookie) League Rangers during the team's 8-3 road win over the Arizona League Reds in Goodyear, Ariz.
The 19-year-old left hander came on in relief of Abel De Los Santos in the bottom of the seventh and the Rangers holding a 7-1 lead, according to MiLB.com
After giving up a ground ball single to left by Brandon Daily, Matthews struck out Julio Morillo and Dailey was caught trying to steal second. Juan Perez popped out to third base to end the inning.
Matthews, 19, was drafted No. 33 overall by the Rangers on June 6. As a senior at RHHS, he was 4-2 with a 1.68 earned run average. He struck out 94 batters and gave up just 14 walks and 18 hits in 42 innings for the Wildcats.
