Lady Redskins win 3-A track crown

Bryan County High School’s girls’ track team has made a habit of winning Region 3-A meets in recent years.

It’s a habit they don’t seem ready to kick, either. The Lady Redskins outpointed Jenkins county by 72 points, for their third straight title. In the boys competition, Bryan County placed fourth.

"I’m just very proud of both teams," BCHS track coach Blake Nesmith said. "We’ve had to deal with a lot of adversity this year, especially injuries. It seems like nothing went smoothly all year, but the kids kept working, kept improving and kept competing. When someone got hurt, somebody else always stepped up to pick up the slack. It’s a testament to their character that they continued to fight as hard as they did, and that’s what I’ll remember about these teams."

Among the individual region title winners on the girls side were Tiffany Howard, who won the 800, 1,600, triple jump and ran on the region champion 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams; Sierra Newman, who won the 100 and was a member of both relay teams; and Alli Thompson, who won the 100 meter hurdles.

The state sectional competition is April 28 in Athens.

Girls team results:

1. Bryan County 173; 2. Jenkins County 101; 3. Truetlen 57; 4. Claxton 51; 5. Johnson County 46; 6. Savannah Christian 41; 7. Savannah Country Day; 8. Metter 24; 8. Portal 24; 10. Emanuel County Institute 18; 11. Calvary Day 14; 12. Wheeler County 2; 13. Montgomery County 1.
