The Richmond Hill boys’ and girls’ tennis teams are both 5-1 on the season, while the Bryan County teams split their first match of the year.

The No. 1 doubles team for the Redskins, Warren Crawford and Christian Shellman, defeated Toombs County in three sets last week during a three-hour marathon tie-breaker. Also picking up wins for the boys were Charlie Flint at No. 2 singles and Amauri Walker and Eli Walker at No. 2 doubles.

For the Bryan County girls, Shelby Barfield won at No. 2 singles, along with Willow Leyva and Kaleigh Morris at No. 2 doubles. The girls fell to Toombs 2-3 while the boys won 3-1.

The Redskins are at Bradwell Monday.

For the Wildcats, the boys’ only loss has been to Savannah Country Day, while the girls lost to Savannah Christian. Both teams are 1-0 in Region 2-AAAAAA, beating Brunswick last week.

For the girls, singles players Hannah Yontz and Megan Bausch are undefeated, as is the boys’ No. 1 doubles team of Joe Belfield and James Shin. The rest of the lineup includes Alec Shermer (5-1), Zach Sewell (3-1), Jackson Martin (4-1), and Stephanie Harter (4-1) at singles, with Ryan Renshaw/Miguel Rodriguez (4-1), Grace Cantele/Bridget Cox (4-1) and Caren Bausch/Bailey Lopata (4-1) at doubles.

“We are on track to qualify for state competition with our old nemesis, Glynn Academy, looking as strong as ever and in our way for the region championship,” coach Jeffrey Graham said. “We may have the best team attitude that I have seen in my 10 years at the helm.”

Both Wildcat teams advanced to the second round of the state tournament last year. They host Glynn Academy at 4 p.m. March 20 at Henderson Park. Their next match is 4 p.m. March 6 at Henderson Park against Bradwell.
