Georgia Southern gets jump on College of Charleston

STATESBORO — Georgia Southern took big early lead en route to a 10-6 victory over College of Charleston on Tuesday at J.I. Clements Stadium.
The Eagles (5-4) scored six runs in the first two innings against the Cougars (3-4), then added one run each in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings.

GSU had 14 hits in the game, with Will Hudgins notching four of them to go with two RBIs and a stolen base. Ryan Cleveland hit his first home run of the season, while Logan Baldwin and Matt Anderson each had a double.
Connor Simmons (1-0) got the win in relief, tossing 1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Richmond Hill native Chandler Newman pitched a scoreless third of an inning for the Eagles in his third appearance of the season. He has not allowed a run in two-thirds of an inning of work.
GSU hosts Memphis for a three-game series starting at 7 p.m. Friday and continuing at 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Eagles host Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
