Fitzgerald, Rooker draw accolades

Richmond Hill alums Nick Fitzgerald and Canon Rooker have advanced on watch lists for two prestigious college football awards at their respective positions.

Fitzgerald, the junior quarterback at Mississippi State, is one of 10 finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The award recognizes accomplishments on the field as well as the player’s character, leadership and academic achievements.

Fitzgerald is the lone SEC quarterback among the finalists. The former Wildcat on the season is 119-for-209 passing with 1,320 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 686 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Bulldogs are 6-2 overall, 3-2 in the SEC. They host UMass in a non-conference game at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Rooker, a senior kicker at Middle Tennessee State, is one of 20 semi-finalists for the Lou Groza Award.

Rooker is 11 of 13 on field goals this season, including 7 of 8 from 40 yards or longer.

The Blue Raiders are 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the Conference USA. They host the University of Texas-El Paso at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
