Coming off their first winning seasons in recent history, both the Bryan County High School Redskins and Richmond Hill High School Wildcats have been busy with summer workouts, camps and passing league tournaments.

Both the Redskins and Wildcats finished 6-4 in 2011.

Limited practice can begin today and Aug. 1 is the first day teams in Georgia can practice in full pads.

Each team will scrimmage one opponent. Richmond Hill plays host to South Effingham at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17 while BCHS takes on Savannah Country Day at SCD at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24.

The regular season kicks off Aug. 31 when BCHS travels to Calvary Day and Richmond Hill plays host to Johnson.

Of note: BCHS returns junior Nick Scott, the 2011 U.S. Army Irnoman of the year for Georgia. Scott, who also was the Bryan County News’ BCHS Player of the Year, ran for more than 900 yards and seven touchdowns while finishing third in tackles with 43.

Richmond Hill senior quarterback Dominique Allen has reportedly committed the U.S. Air Force Academy. Kicker Canon Rooker has reportedly committed to Middle Tennessee State University, an FBS team that competes in the Sun Belt Conference. Last season, five Wildcats signed to play college football.

Practice at BCHS begins Aug. 6 and the first regular season game is Aug. 10 against Tattnall County. The Lady Redskins under coach Al Butler have advanced to the Elite Eight in the state Class A tournament in four of the past five seasons.

The Lady Redskins lost several starters to graduation, including two-time Class A Player of the Year Tiffany Howard, but Butler said his team returns a mix of experienced underclassman and talented freshmen.

At RHHS, the Lady Wildcats will begin the Angie Hummeldorf era July 30 with preseason conditioning. Tryouts are Aug. 1 and the team takes on McIntosh County Academy in a preaseason scrimmage on Aug. 6 before opening the regular season against Groves at home at 6 p.m. Aug. 14.
