Last season, the Richmond Hill High School boys basketball team won the Savannah Holiday Classic with a senior-laden group that went on to win the Region 2-AAAA tournament and finish 21-9.
This season, a different group of Wildcats are following in the 2010-11 team's footsteps.
The 2011-12 Wildcats knocked off potent Groves and Windsor Forest last week on their way to a second straight Savannah Holiday Classic title in the Washington Square bracket.
The wins improved Richmond Hill to 8-3. Last year's team was 9-3 at this point. And this was supposed to be a rebuilding year.
"If you told me ahead of time we were going to beat Windsor Forest and Groves, I'd of found that hard to believe," said coach William Altman after the Wildcats' tourney wins. "But this team has made believers out of me. Hopefully, they'll believe in themselves."
Led by 6-foot-3 transfer James Williams, along with Spencer Buck, Alex Cruz, Kody Morales and JJ Franklin, the Wildcats find themselves heading into the region portion of their schedule playing in a manner that warms their coach's heart.
"We don't have a lot of size, we're not super athletic, we're not really long or really, really quick," Altman said. "But, they'll play hard and they'll play smart."
