Bryan County opens region with two wins

Each Bryan County team opened its Region 2-AA tournament with a win Tuesday at Long County High School in Ludowici.

The Lady Redskins downed Bacon County 48-30 in their opening game in the girls’ tournament to move on to the quarterfinals against St. Vincent’s on Wednesday. The Redskins topped Groves 72-68 in the boys’ tournament. That earned them a quarterfinal matchup against Bacon County on Wednesday. Neither quarterfinal game’s result was available at press time.

In action last week, both BCHS teams lost at home Friday to Vidalia in their regular-season finales.
The Lady Redskins lost 74-56. BCHS was tied with Vidalia at 15-all after the first quarter Friday, but was outscored 25-7 in the second and 24-8 in the third as the visitors pulled away.

The Redskins fell 73-40.

All-Region picks for spring sports announced
RHHS Wildcats

Richmond Hill placed several players on their respective All-Region teams in Region 2-AAAAAA for tennis and soccer after all four teams made it to their respective state tournaments this spring.

In girls’ soccer, first-team selections were Grace Kiser, Ruthie Riley, Carly Vargas and Ellie Filamonczuk. Honorable mention went to Bella Martinez. Arianna Page and Lexi Merry.

For boys’ soccer, Joseph Petrino, Agboade Sobowale, Roman Alvarez, Trever Blitchington and Cristian Marquez made first team.

For girls’ tennis, Hannah Yontz, Megan Bausch and Stephanie Harter all made the second team at singles, as did the doubles team of Bailey Lopata and Caren Bausch.

For the boys, Jackson Martin was first team singles and Alec Shermer was second team singles. Zach Sewell received honorable mention.
