The seedings have been set for the Region 2-AAAA basketball tournament at South Effingham High School and though neither the Richmond Hill boys or girls finished the regular season well enough to earn first-round byes, both are hopeful of advancing to state.
The Lady Wildcats face Greenbrier from the B side of the region Monday at 8 p.m. and the Wildcats face Evans on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Should the girls advance they play Staesboro on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
The boys are lined up to play Effingham County Thursday night at 8 p.m. if they beat Evans.
Effingham County finished the season 19-6 overall and 9-1 in the region. While the Wildcats beat them twice during the regular season, Evans handed the Rebels their only region loss.
The girls ended the season on a five-game losing streak against the toughest part of the schedule, so coach Elizabeth Bennett is hopeful the experience will carry them in the post season.
If RHHS gets past Greenbrier(3-15, 1-8), they face a Statesboro (21-3, 10-0) squad on a 12-game win streak.
Season finales
On Friday the girls finished their regular season against Calvary Day School with a 60-45 loss on senior night and a "Pink-Out" celebrating breast cancer awareness.
Keeara Jackson had 14 points and Aliyah Johnson finished with 13 for the Lady Wildcats.
Tay Reynolds was honored afterward as the only graduating Lady Wildcat. So were Wildcats Lorenza Ross, Stephen Williams, DAngelo Johnson, Rashee Stocks, Brandon Jordan and Vernon Jackson.
The boys used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the Cavaliers in the night cap 61-49. The Wildcats were led by Ross and Jackson with 14 points each, but it was Johnson's late breakaway dunk that sparked the team and ignited the large crowd late in the game. Johnson finished with 11 points.
