Coastal Little League struck first, but Athens hit the hardest and most late Sunday afternoon to win 14-4 in five innings on the second day of pool play in the 2012 Georgia Little League 10/11-year-old state championship in Richmond Hill.
In the other late afternoon game, Murphey Candler (2-0) knocked off Midway Heights 10-7.
Isaiah Worley carried the big stick for Murphey Candler, going 4-for-4 with a home run, two singles and a double. Jacob Boltax was credited with the win.
Midway Heights (0-2) was led by Keiron Dowell, who had two singles and a double.
Richmond Hill's Coastal Little League (1-1) got things started early when Evan Richardson hit a grand slam in the top of the first ininiing, but the Wildcats went scoreless from then on. Athens scored two in the first, two more in the second, four in the third and six in the fifth for the win.
Peyton Shedd had a 3-run home run in the third for Athens, which improves to 2-0 in Pool 1.
Teddy Rovolis, Brandon Schweir and Cam Gilkey took turns on the mound for the Wildcats while Shedd, Mack Simmons and Maximus Johnson threw for Athens.
Pool play continues through Wednesday at the Richmond Hill Recreation Park.
