Athens, Columbus Northern stay unbeaten

Athens and Columbus Northern remained unbeaten in pool play after the two teams won Monday afternoon on the third day of the 2012 Georgia Little League 10/11-year-old state championship inRichmond Hill.

Athens knocked off Martinez Evans National 6-4 by scoring five runs in the sixth inning. Mike Talmadge had five hits and Maximus Johnson had four hits, including a fourth inning home run, for Athens(3-0).

Mack Simmons III chipped in three hits while Barrett McLanahan, James Brinson and Doug Clements had two hits apiece forAthens, which also got hits from Stewart Crymes, Matt Marvel and Peyton Shedd.  

Athens’ James Bangle got the start and went three innings. Brinson, McLanahan, Talmadge and Simmons finished out the game.

David Fulcher had four hits, including a home run, and Will Childers had four hits for Martinez Evans, which fell to 0-2. Ashton Sturgell and Jackson Rosier had three hits each. Kohl Chambers, Tucker Whitaker, Tucker Meyer and Davis Cook had two hits each and Zach Thurman recorded a base hit.

Sturgell went five innings on the mound for Martinez Evans. Thurman, Cook and Chambers pitched in relief.

Columbus Northern  knocked off Midway 16-1 in four innings to improve to 2-0. Trent Grantham hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Josh Evans hit a two-run single for Columbus Northern. Colby Brabston picked up the win.

MidwayHeights(0-3) got its only run on an RBI double from Jordan Dennis in the first inning.

The games were delayed for 90 minutes due to rain but tournament staff members were able to get the fields playable again.
