The Citadel, led by Richmond Hill native and quarterback Dominique Allen, had two history-making moments over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs topped Southeastern Conference school South Carolina 23-22 in Columbia. Allen had 17 carries for 25 yards and was 2-of-3 passing for 37 yards, according to ESPN.com. It was the first time since 1992 that The Citadel beat a Football Bowl Subdivision team, according to CitadelSports.com.
The Bulldogs moved to 8-3 with the win, while the Gamecocks fell to 3-8.
Then on Sunday, The Citadel found out it had been selected for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. The Bulldogs will play at Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. Saturday in Conway, South Carolina, according to CitadelSports.com. The Bulldogs are rated No. 18 in the final regular-season FCS poll.
Saturday’s game will be The Citadel’s first playoff appearance since 1992 and its fourth playoff berth overall, according to the school’s website.
