Kevin Zhu seems wise beyond his years.

The 14-year-old Richmond Hill High School freshman recently won the sportsmanship award for his age group at the 2012 USTA Junior Team Tennis Georgia state championships in Macon.

One of only a handful to earn the honor, which was voted on by opposing coaches, Zhu’s approach to sports is pretty simple.

"I don’t see the point in doing something if you’re not happy doing it," he said.

But Zhu, an aspiring scientist, wasn’t always a candidate for sportsmanship awards.

"I had incidences of bad sportsmanship in the past," he said. "I learned that having a bad attitude doesn’t get you anywhere."

So, one should see no rolling of the eyes at officials nor gloating over opponents from Zhu, who runs cross country at RHHS and will play tennis in the spring.
