The Richmond Hill High School Lady Wildcats played in their first home game of the regular season in their new gym on Tuesday and they were able to come away with a convincing 52-35 win over the visiting Ware County Lady Gators’ basketball team.

The Lady ‘Cats looked more like themselves in the game than they had in previous contests.

The visiting Lady Gators made the short one-hour drive from Waycross in hopes of keeping their two game win streak alive, but were unable to do so against the hosting Lady ‘Cats. After back to back 18-point wins in their first two games, Ware County fell by 17 to Richmond Hill at their new gym.

After losing to Statesboro High School last Saturday, the Lady ‘Cats knew they had to turn things around to get back in the win column, and they did just that.

“The key for us to be successful in last night’s game was to play at our pace,” senior leader Zion Bernard said. “We seem to be rushed when we play undisciplined teams but last night we finally locked in and played our game.

“Another key point was rebounding and crashing the boards along with finishing. We had plenty of rebounds at Statesboro but didn’t finish through. Last night was a come through for all of that for the whole team. We were very proud, especially us seniors because that is how we should’ve played the last 3 games!”

The Lady ‘Cats will have a break for Thanksgiving, but will get right back into things as they take on Brunswick after the break. Bernard and the rest of the Lady ‘Cats are familiar with Brunswick, as they played them last year. While Bernard was not with the team, she is still familiar with the Lady Pirates and their style of play, which kept things tight, only allowing for a 43-42 win at home in 2024.

“We know that Brunswick is a scrappy team but the goal is still the same,” Bernard said. “We have to play at our pace. That is the most important aspect for us as a whole.”

The Lady ‘Cats will make the short, one-hour trip to Brunswick, which will put extra pressure on them being in a hostile environment. Richmond Hill hopes to extend their record to 3-1, while the Lady Pirates are looking to remain undefeated and sit at 3-0 if they win. The game will be held at Brunswick High School on Tuesday, December 2. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 6pm.
