The Richmond Hill High School golf team has seen some success thus far this season. They recently defeated both Liberty and Bryan County. They have an overall 2-3 record and have placed within the top two of all but one tournament they have participated in.
Not bad for a youthful team that is in a rebuilding year. First year Head Coach Alex Gray said much of the team’s success can be attributed to two returning players – Tyler Steptoe for the boys and Brittany Jarrell for the girls. Jarrell is the only remaining girl on the team. Basketball MVP Tyler Carlson was sidelined recently due to a finger injury.
Steptoe leads his team of nine boys with some impressive statistics. He has a 4-1 individual record and his scoring average for nine holes is 38.
"We have strengths with a lot of youth," Gray said. "We’re just getting warmed up, and next year should be even better. Tyler, a junior, will be with us again next year, and the younger guys will have a lot more experience under their belts. Meanwhile, we’re getting geared up and ready for our home matches and for regionals – and having a lot of fun in the process."
Other members of the team include Sean Grimes, Andrew Schaas, Ryan Tillman, Zach Smith, Parker Daniels, Kevin Green, Dominick Dolnack and Brandon Bickley.
The team had their first home match, at Waterford Landing, versus South Effingham last night but details were not available as of press time. Next up is two more home matches, April 7 versus Calvary and April 14 against Liberty, before the region tournament at the end of the month.
