Homecoming queen announced at BCHS

It took a while due to Hurricane Helene but Bryan County High School finally got its Homecoming Queen crowned at halftime of last Friday night’s football game with McIntosh County Academy.


The Homecoming game was originally scheduled for Sept. 27 against Claxton but the game itself was moved up two days due to projected adverse weather with the ceremonies rescheduled for the next home game.


The Homecoming Queen is traditionally a senior and that was the case this year. Representing the senior class were Haley Thomas, Gi’auni Smith and Reece Raeburn with Smith being named the Homecoming Queen. She was crowned by Haylie Carer who was last year’s Homecoming Queen and is now a freshman at Georgia Southern.


Following is the bio information on each candidate as provided by the school:


  • Gi’auni Smith: the daughter of Gregory Smith and Charissa Reece was escorted by her mother and Daedrian Reece. Gi’auni has been a football and basketball cheerleader for four years. She listed her favorite interests as traveling with her best friend, Kamryn, shopping, sleeping and watching Netflix. She plans on attending Kennesaw State University and majoring in criminal justice with the goal of becoming a homicide detective.


  • Reece Raeburn: the daughter of Erik and Elizabeth Raeburn she was escorted by her parents. One of the school’s top athletes, she plays volleyball and soccer with plans to play flag football this fall and run track next spring. Reece’s school activities include being a member of student council, game day cheer, spirit club, beta club and Spanish Honors Society. In college she plans on obtaining a double major in criminal justice and fashion design with a minor in Spanish.


  • Haley Thomas: Another multi-sport athlete as she is a kicker on the football team, a starter in soccer, and also plays flag football and has run cross country. She is the granddaughter of Laurie Evans and was escorted by her father Billy Brick. She wants to play soccer in college and major in sports medicine.


Representing the junior class was Jada Richardson who is the daughter of Angel and John Richardson. She listed her interests as going to the gym, dancing and shopping. She plans on attending Georgia Southern to become a pediatric nurse.


Sha’niya Joyner represented the sophomore class. She is the daughter of Garrett Joyner and Prisheena Bacon and she was escorted by Louis Bacon. She participates in basketball and track. Her goal is to attend the University of South Carolina and become a lawyer. She said she most enjoys shopping and tasting her Nana’s cooking.


The freshman representative was Brooklyn Cason who is the daughter of Benita and Derrick Cason. She has been a member of the Pride of the Tribe band for three years and serves as its librarian. She is vice-president of the freshman student council and is a member of the beta club, golf team and has been a member of Supt. Dr. Paul Brooksher’s student advisory council. Upon graduation she hopes to attend North Carolina A&T University and major in psychology and minor in criminal justice.

Wildcats compete in 7-on-7 football

On June 13, the Richmond Hill Wildcats football team competed at a 7-on-7 football camp hosted at Statesboro by Georgia Southern’s football program. Various other high school programs in the southeast Georgia region were in attendance.
