The Richmond Hill High School Lady Wildcats basketball team has been winning all season, and they have continued those winning ways when it comes to winning region awards.
Sitting at 17-11 on the season, that win total is the most since the 2020 season, and the most overall since the 2018 season, where the team was able to capture an 18-win season.
However, this team is not done yet.
After knocking region foe Valdosta out of the playoffs by defeating them for the third time in one season, the Lady Wildcats find themselves in position to get some more wins, via the state playoffs in Region 1-7A.
Before that run begins, though, the Lady Wildcats placed seven athletes with awards in the region; all seven of which get the most significant playing time on the team, a tip of the hat to head coach Sarah Jones and her hard-working staff.
Junior standout Mmekom Inyang has played well all season on both ends of the floor. However, it was her defensive prowess that earned her the award as the Region 1-7A Defensive Player of the Year.
Senior leader MaKiyah Matthews wowed crowds all year with her impressive shooting abilities and her overall leadership, earning her way into First Team All-Region honors. Junior Jada Brown played well on both ends of the floor, and she was also named as First Team All-Region.
Sophomore sensations Cullen McCormick and Emari Brown both earned awards for Second Team All-Region on the season. While both athletes are the younger players on the team, both of their presences are immediately felt when either one sets foot on the hardwood.
Senior standout Lexanna Oge, who hit a near half-court buzzer beater against Valdosta in the elimination game secured Honorable Mention on the year. Junior Ariyana Canady played in multiple spots on the floor all year and her selfless leadership gained Honorable Mention on the year as well.
The Lady Wildcats look to continue their winning ways, as they get on the road to take on the undefeated Grayson Lady Rams (27-0), in hopes of an upset and extended playoff run on February 21. Tip-off is at 5pm.
